Penalty Definitions
Boarding: Violently checking an opponent into boards.
Charging: Taking more then three (3) strides or jumping before hitting an opponent.
Crosschecking: To hit an opponent with both hands on the stick, and then extending the arms while the check is being delivered.
Delay of Game: Imposed when a player or goalkeeper purposely delays the game in any way.
Elbowing: When a player uses an elbow to impede an opponent.
Fighting: A fistfight between players.
High-Sticking: To illegally strike an opponent or puck, with stick above shoulder level.
Holding: To use your hands to grasp an opponent or his equipment.
Hooking: Impeding the forward progress of another player by hooking him with the blade of the stick.
Icing: Shooting the puck from behind the centerline, across the opposing goal line, and allowing a defending player to touch it first.
Interference: To impede progress of an opponent who does not have the puck or who is in contention for the puck. Also called for knocking a fallen opponent’s stick out of reach.
Kneeing: When a player uses his knee to impede an opponent.
Misconduct/ Unsportsmanlike Conduct: When a player uses abusive language or gestures, or fails to follow an official’s orders.
Roughing: When a player shoves, or is involved in a minor altercation or scuffle, a less severe form of fighting.
Slashing: occurs when a player swings his stick and strikes an opponent, thus impeding his forward progress.
Spearing: When a player thrusts his stick like a spear at his opponent.
Tripping: When a player trips an opponent with his stick or any part of his body.
Washout: When a goal is ruled null or void by the referee.
