Murray, Simpson Selected to Canadian U-18 Team
Everett Silvertips Press Release
Everett, WA - Everett Silvertips Vice President / General Manager Doug Soetaert announced Wednesday that defenseman Ryan Murray and goaltender Kent Simpson have been selected to the Canadian Under-18 Team that will participate in the IIHF Under-18 World Championships in Minsk and Bobruisk, Belarus, from April 13-23. Both players will be representing Hockey Canada for the second time in their careers after Murray appeared for Team West at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in 2010 and Simpson backstopped Team Pacific to a Silver Medal at the 2009 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
Murray, 16, recently completed a standout rookie season for the Silvertips in which he tallied 27 points on five goals and 22 assists in 52 games played along with a +33 rating. The 6'0, 185 pound defenseman out of White City, Saskatchewan, was Everett's first round selection (eighth overall) in the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft and is not draft eligible until 2012. He was named the Silvertips' Rookie of the Year by the club's coaching staff.
Simpson, 17, had a breakthrough season in his second year with the Silvertips, finishing second in the WHL with both a 2.26 GAA and a .925 save percentage while posting a 22-9-1-0 record. The 6'2, 182 pound Edmonton native was Everett's first round selection (22nd overall) in the 2007 WHL Bantam Draft and was ranked as the second best draft-eligible goaltender in the WHL in the NHL Central Scouting midterm draft rankings. He was invited to Hockey Canadas summer select camp in August, 2009.
Murray and Simpson join Byron Froese, Peter Mueller and Ondrej Fiala as Silvertips who have been selected for the Under-18 World Championships. Team Canada opens the tournament against Switzerland at 3:00 pm local time on Tuesday, April 13th, at Bobruisk Arena.
