Top Ten Silvertips Victories of 2009-10
What was YOUR favorite game of the season?
Everett Silvertips Press Release
Everett, WA - While compiling the top victories of the past regular season, it became apparent that out of a 46 total wins and a franchise-record 14-game winning streak, it was difficult to name just five victories that stood out. So consider this the top ten victories of 2009-10 - which includes five honorable mentions - many of which sent Comcast Arena into a tizzy.
Honorable Mentions
12/19/09 - Everett 4, Chilliwack 3 (SO) - Prospera Centre
The game opened with Thomas Heemskerk sprawling to make a world-class save on Ryan Howse less then two minutes in, and ended with Byron Froese notching the game-winner in the fifth round of the shootout. Heemer's save cracked the top-10 plays in the WHL this season as the 'Tips headed into the Christmas break on a high note.
1/10/10 - Everett 4, Spokane 3 (SO) - Comcast Arena
Facing a two-goal deficit to begin the third, the Silvertips didn't blink as Scott MacDonald narrowed the lead to one before Ryan Murray snapped the game-tying goal home from the top of the left circle after deking around a Spokane forward with just 2:05 to play. MacDonald provided the shootout's game-winner, leading to a Thomas Heemskerk save on Levko Koper to cement Everett's sixth straight victory.
1/17/10 - Everett 4, Seattle 3 (OT) - Comcast Arena
It wasn-t the prettiest game of the season, but oh boy, did it leave one of the more memorable moments in franchise history. Tied at three midway through overtime, Zack Dailey won a faceoff along the right wing to Shane Harper, who toe-dragged around Tanner Muth, skated within point blank range of Calvin Pickard, and lifted a quick snapshot glove-side into the top of the net as Comcast Arena erupted in celebration for the Silvertips' ninth straight win.
1/22/10 - Everett 4, Portland 3 - Memorial Coliseum
When Shane Harper opened the scoring 16 seconds in with his franchise-record 88th career goal, Silvertips fans knew it was going to be a special night. In a playoff-style game on the road against a heated rival, the Silvertips won their eleventh straight, courtesy of three power play goals, one of which came off the stick of Byron Froese as the game-winner with 2:33 to play.
2/19/10 - Everett 3, Tri-City 2 - Toyota Center
This game was an indication of the Silvertips' resilience throughout the season - after taking an early 2-0 lead to see Tri-City to fight back to tie less than a minute into the third period, the Silvertips responded with their best hockey of the night. Two shifts after the tying goal, Kellan Tochkin redirected a Tyler Maxwell pass past Drew Owsley as Everett won on the road in Tri-City on a regionally televised Fox Sports Northwest game.
THE TOP FIVE
#5 1/29/10 - Everett 4, Portland 3 - Comcast Arena
This Friday night was eagerly anticipated by a raucous crowd of over 7,000 at Comcast Arena as the Silvertips were gunning to tie a franchise record with their 13th straight win. Standing in their way were the Portland Winterhawks, along with Luca Sbisa, a standout defenseman at both World Juniors and the Olympics with Switzerland, who was making his first appearance with the Winterhawks following a draft deadline trade. The game started out with a familiar script: Shane Harper potted one of his league-leading 15 first goals to get things going in the first period before Chris Langkow made it a 2-0 game on a rush at 11:38 of the second. After Portland's Ty Rattie and Zack Dailey traded off goals, Rattie potted his second of the game on a nifty move while dancing through the Everett slot with just 12 seconds to play in the second period, bringing Portland within one. Chris Francis converted a wraparound attempt early in the third period to tie the game before Everett responded with a goal that raised the decibel levels at Comcast Arena when Zack Dailey redirected Radko Gudas' power play point shot past Mac Carruth with just over 11 minutes to play. Kent Simpson held strong through the tense moments of the third period as Everett outshot, outworked, and outscored Portland 4-3 en route to their 13th straight win.
#4 11/1/09 - Everett 2, Edmonton 1 (SO) - Rexall Place
Following in line with the other one-goal victories above and below, the Silvertips were finally able to crack the Oil Kings' curse in their third meeting, all of which have taken place on November 1st. This time around, Everett and Edmonton engaged in a terrific junior hockey game featuring back and forth action, good grinding and working at both ends of the ice, and one of the year's standout goaltending battles as Kent Simpson and Cam Lanigan combined to stop 75 of 77 shots through regulation and overtime. Prior to the shootout, Kellan Tochkin gave the Silvertips a 1-0 lead midway through the first period by scoring on a backhand off a rebound; Edmonton answered late in the second when Michael St. Croix scored on a deflection off a Mark Pysyk shot as future Silvertip Clayton Cumiskey provided a secondary assist. After an overtime in which Simpson turned aside all six Oil Kings shots, he came up with three more saves in the shootout, earning the victory when Tochkin stickhandled his way around Lanigan for the shootout's only goal. A key early season game, the Silvertips would conclude a hard-working roadtrip with a 4-1-1 record against the Central Division.
#3 1/30/10 - Everett 2, Kamloops 1 - Comcast Arena
The Silvertips opened January with a bang, and they closed it with a 2-1 victory over Kamloops in one of the loudest games ever played at Comcast Arena. All in all, the book ends were part of 14 consecutive wins by the club, cemented with a hard-working, competitive battle that represents so much of what makes playoff contention on hockey so exciting. The referees put their whistles away for this one, which resulted in a committed Everett team that peppered Blazer goalie Jon Groenheyde with shot after shot - 15 in the first period alone - as the Silvertips climbed out in front 2-0 on goals from Shane Harper and Chris Langkow. Each team received only two power plays, opening the door for some great end-to-end 5-on-5 hockey. Brendan Ranford scored a hustle goal for Kamloops early in the second period that seemed to energize the Silvertips, who outshot the Blazers 20-13 over the final two periods in one of their stronger 60-minute efforts of the season. With fans counting down the remaining seconds until the players made history with their 14th consecutive win, the buzzer finally sounded and with flags waving and cowbells ringing, the Silvertips streamed off the bench to celebrate the win with Thomas Heemskerk, whose efforts completed a terrific January in which he was 7-0 with a 1.82 goals against average and .936 save percentage.
#2 9/26/09 - Everett 4, Vancouver 3 (SO) - Comcast Arena
What more could you ask for from a home opener other than a shorthanded breakaway goal early in the first period, a late game-tying goal, and a win in an extended shootout against a heated rival? The Silvertips proved there would be a ton of memorable moments in store for the year when they treated their fans to a thriller just five days after summer ended. One week removed from a come-from-behind victory at Vancouver's Pacific Coliseum, the 'Tips stormed out to a 2-0 lead midway through the first on a deke move to complete a shorthanded breakaway by Daniel Iwanski, followed by Radko Gudas' third WHL goal in just his third career game when he lit one up from the point on the power play at 12:08. The Giants fought back to tie the game and eventually took the lead with a power play marker with under five minutes to play, setting the stage for the exciting finish. With Thomas Heemskerk pulled for the extra attacker and with one minute remaining in the third, Zack Dailey's shot from the top of the right circle deflected off a Vancouver stick and fluttered over Jamie Tucker's shoulder into the back of the net to tie the game at three. After a back-and-forth overtime that saw the two teams combine for seven shots, Tyler Maxwell and Shane Harper scored in the shootout as Thomas Heemskerk stopped three of four shots to lift the 'Tips to one of their three wins against the rival Vancouver Giants.
#1 1/2/10 - Everett 6, Tri-City 5 (SO) - Comcast Arena
The Silvertips began their 14-game winning streak under murky circumstances: defensive partners Ryan Murray and Radko Gudas were participating in international tournaments and were not available, Daniel Iwanski was still on the shelf with an injury, and the Silvertips limped through a three-win December that concluded with 19 wins in their 38 total games. That's what makes this victory so important - with the absence of several of their key players, and enduring a stretch in which, while shorthanded, they played division leaders Tri-City and Saskatoon five games out of six, the Silvertips shook off these hindrances and relied on a unified team effort that saw particular players step up with clutch performances. While Alex Theriau provided an assist and a +3 rating while inheriting the role as a top pairing defenseman, this game will always be linked to the line combination of Zack Dailey, Chris Langkow and Shane Harper - the Silvertips' three 20 year olds. With goals from Dailey on their first two shifts of the game, the trio lifted the rest of the Silvertips, catalyzing an offense that erupted for six goals on the evening, the final one coming from Dailey in the seventh round of the shootout. Before that, the see-saw battle saw the teams tied at three after one period before the Americans scored in the second to take a one-goal lead into the third. After the 'Tips tied it early in the third period on a Harper goal, they were able to establish good pressure in the Tri-City end late in the third. With 2:35 to play, Tyler Maxwell redirected a Paul Sohor shot past Alexander Pechurskiy, giving the 'Tips a 5-4 lead and precipitating an enormous roar from the arena. Though Brett Plouffe tied it less than a minute later for Tri-City, the stage was set for Dailey's goal and Kent Simpson stopping five of seven in the extended shootout. The Silvertips would win 13 more to finish a perfect 14-0 after this bridge-building, team-unifying game.
