SILVERTIPS LIVE DRAFT BLOG
Everett Silvertips Press Release

Bookmark and Share

Everett, WA - *7:00 AM*
Good morning, Silvertip Country, and thank you for joining our live blog, which will be updated throughout the day with breaking news from the WHL Bantam Draft and analysis of the day's events.

We'll also be posting updates on Facebook (Everett Silvertips Hockey Club) and Twitter (@WHLsilvertips), and encourage fans to send questions to jonr@everettsilvertips.com - we'll do our best to get the question answered quickly on either the live blog or via email.

Everett's first two picks are 18th and 40th overall in what is considered to be a fairly deep draft. After that, the Silvertips next pick will come in the 5th round, 106th overall.

It is expected that forward Alex Forsberg will go first overall to the Prince George Cougars. His brother, Jesse Forsberg, enjoyed a fine rookie season with the Cougars, impressing people with his toughness and competitive attitude - even opting to fight Radko Gudas as a 16 year old. The younger Forsberg put up 72 points in 44 games with the AAA midget Beardy's Blackhawks this year.

There's not a whole lot else to report here, so we'll catch up in a couple of minutes once we get closer to 7:30, the real start of today's events. Remember to catch us on Twitter and Facebook, and please send us your questions!

They're getting ready for the first selection at the Fantasyland Hotel in Edmonton - we hope you'll stay with us from the Silvertips War Room at Comcast Arena as we get ready for the first round!

*7:30 AM*
Those of us here in the War Room already like the new WHL draft log. Follow this link, and you can now sort players by the team they were drafted by: http://whl.ca/draft/draft.php

*7:55 AM*
I've been told that several picks have been made, but the WHL is in the process of verifying background information and birthdays before they're ready to put the picks on the web site. Now how about those Montreal Canadiens?

*8:10 AM*
Even though it's not up on the WHL draft tracker, I just got an email from the league that Jesse Forsberg was taken first overall by Prince George. The Seattle Thunderbirds are also reporting that they selected 6'4 defenseman Jared Hauf of Calgary, AB, with their first round pick.

*8:15 AM*
All right, now we're rolling. The Kamloops Blazers decided on taking forward Matt Needham of nearby Penticton with the 8th overall pick. All he did last year was put up 253 points in 64 games; he had expressed a desire to play for the Blazers should he choose the WHL route. We're getting close to the Silvertips' first round pick...

*8:20 AM*
And we have our first trade of the day, with Tri-City trading up to select goaltender Eric Comrie, brother of Mike Comrie. Looks like Tri traded their 19th overall pick and their 2nd rounder next year to Vancouver to move up to #13 to select Comrie. Tri-City also traded up last year to the 7th overall pick to select forward Connor Rankin.

*8:30 AM*
Everett has made a trade with Edmonton, acquiring the Oil Kings' second and fourth round picks (24th and 68th overall) in exchange for Everett's first round pick (18th overall). The Silvertips now hold the 24th, 40th, 68th, 106th, 133rd, 150th, 194th and 216th picks in the draft.

*8:50 AM*
The first round has been completed - not a bad day for the province of Alberta, home to 12 of the 22 first round selections. The city of Calgary has also produced six first round picks, including selections three through six. One U.S.-based player was selected as the aforementioned Eric Comrie was taken 13th overall by Tri-City; the U.S. is more of a temporary home for Comrie, an Edmonton native who played for the LA Selects bantam team this past year. There will now be a short, 10-20 minute break while teams contact players and devote some time to media arrangements; use this time to send your questions or comments to jonr@everettsilvertips.com. The Silvertips will hold the second pick when we return from the short break.

*9:10 AM*
With the Silvertips first pick, taken in the second round, 24th overall, they select center Ryan Chynoweth, the son of Kootenay Ice GM Jeff Chynoweth and grandson of former WHL Commissioner Ed Chynoweth. Ryan, 5'11 and 150, was born 4/8/95. He had 60 points in 32 games with the Lethbridge Golden Hawks AAA bantam team last year. We'll get a scouting report from Silvertips Director of Player Development Scott Scoville on both Chynoweth and Everett's 40th pick once the second round concludes.

*9:30 AM*
With the 40th overall pick, the Silvertips have selected D Tye Hand, a 6'3, 170 pound defenseman from Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Tye is a big, rangy defenseman who will be difficult to play against. Last year in 50 games, he registered 31 points (6-25-31) and 112 penalty minutes.

I spoke with Scott Scoville moments ago, who was speaking very highly of Ryan Chynoweth, the Silvertips' 24th overall pick. Scoville mentioned that Ryan is a strong, two-way centerman with good size, and stressed that he is an upright young hockey player, someone that the Silvertips are excited to bring into the organization.

Time to write a couple of press releases here, so there'll be a short break before Everett's 4th round pick, 68th overall.

*10:15 AM*
With their 4th round pick, 68th overall, the Silvertips selected right defenseman Austin Adam from Surrey, BC. Adam, born March 7th, 1995, stands 6'3 and weighs 160 pounds. It appears as though there's some pretty good size coming into the Silvertips organization. We'll have a scouting report from Scott Scoville coming soon.

*11:00 AM*
Some interesting names were taken in the fourth round, especially if you are a fan of nouns: Spencer Wand was taken 75th by Kootenay, Landon Bow 78th by Swift Current, and Jackson Whistle 79th by Vancouver. Even though Tyler Fuhr, taken 87th overall by Brandon, is an Edmonton-based goaltender, he is not related to Oilers great Grant Fuhr.

*11:10 AM*
I just got off the phone with Silvertips Manitoba-based scout Doug Sinclair, who told me that Everett's 5th round selection, 106th overall, is LW Geordie Maguire of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Maguire is 6'1, 155 lbs, and a big power forward with good hands and a scorers touch.

*11:20 AM*
I just chatted with Scoville, who told me that Austin Adam, Everett's fourth round selection, is someone who brings a good physical element to the game. He stands 6'3, and is a large, rangy defenseman who has the ability to move the puck up the ice well. Scoville says that he plays a similar game to the Silvertips' second pick of the draft, defenseman Tye Hand. Both are large, physical defensemen who like to play the body. Everett's next pick is the first pick of the 7th round, 133rd overall; the 'Tips also own the 18th pick of the 7th round, the 150th overall pick.

*11:30 AM*
It sounds as if they're breaking for lunch in Edmonton. We'll relay additional information on Everett's picks shortly; the draft should pick up again in a half an hour, give or take.

12:00 PM*
And we're back. The 6th round has begun; Everett has two upcoming 7th round picks, 133rd and 150th overall.

*12:30 PM*
With the first pick in the 7th round, and the 133rd pick overall, the Silvertips chose Michael Bell, a big, physical power forward who plays with a nasty streak. Standing 6'1 and weighing 170, Michael is a native of Vancouver suburb Maple Ridge BC, the hometown of former Silvertip Brennan Sonne. Bell had 80 points in 44 games played last season. More detailed statistics, along with the scouting reports for every player, will be posted on www.everettsilvertips.com once the draft concludes.

*12:40 PM*
Often times relaying information on bantam-aged players is an imperfect science; Alad Caldwell's blog (smallatlarge.blogspot.com) reports that Bell played in 24 games last year, recording 19 goals and 25 assists for 44 points. Let's run with those stats.

*1:05 PM*
Everett's second selection in the 7th round, 150th overall, is St. Adolphe, Manitoba native Austin Lotz, who stands 5'11 and weighs 180 pounds. We'll have a scouting report on him in just a moment. The 7th round had several interesting names called - Jakson Elynuik, brother of Silvertips forward Campbell Elynuik, was selected with the 147th overall pick by the Kootenay Ice. Campbell was also a 7th rounder - back in 2007 - when he was the 154th player chosen. Mill Creek native and Seattle Jr. product Brad LeLievre was taken 144th overall by Seattle, while Kent native Damon Hanson was selected two spots later by Medicine Hat.

*1:10 PM*
Everett's most recent selection, Austin Lotz, is a goaltender who appeared with the Bantam AA Southwest Jets, posting a 14-12 record in 27 games with a 3.63 GAA and a .916 save percentage.

*1:30 PM*
It appears as though Everett has acquired Kootenay's 8th round pick, 169th overall, and used it to select C Carson Stadnyk, a 5'11, 140 pound forward out of Saskatoon. Stadnyk, playing for the Bantam AA Saskatoon Maniacs, put together one heck of a season, tallying 116 points on 66 goals and 50 assists in 55 games played to go along with 86 PIM. Stadnyk has been described as a slick playmaking skilled center.

*2:05 PM*
Two more of Everett's picks are in: C Kyle Messervey of Sundre, AB, and D Chandler Bruyckere of Parksville, BC. Messervey stands 6'0 and weighs 158 pounds and has been described as a true power forward; Bruyckere is 6'1, 170 and is a physical, stay at home defenseman. Everett continues to add a ton of size and toughness in this draft.

*2:25 PM*
Several teams are beginning to pass, but expect the Silvertips to hang in there for another round or two. In the 10th round, 203rd overall, Regina selected Alec McCrea of El Cajon, CA. Even though El Cajon is just 80 miles from Markus McCrea's home of Canyon Lake, CA, the two are not related. Also, a full release, with reports on all of Everett's selections, will be available at everettsilvertips.com shortly after the conclusion of the draft.

*2:40 PM*
Two more of Everett's picks are in - with the 213rd overall pick, Everett took F Cody Depourcq, described as a very good scorer with a good touch. Not too shaby of a year for Cody in 2009-10, recording 116 goals and 90 assists in 60 GP. With the 216th overall pick (still in the 10th round), Everett selected G Casey Parker, who turned in a fine season, winning 12 of his 15 GP and finishing with a 1.32 GAA and .915 Sv%.

*2:55 PM*
Just got the confirmation that the Silvertips have made their final pick of the draft, selecting 6'3, 180 pound defenseman Andrew Weich. In 23 games this season, Welch finished with 17 points on two goals and 15 assists. He was described as a large, rangy defenseman. All scouting and background information will be posted shortly on the Silvertips site.
