Everett, WA - USA Hockey revealed Wednesday that Associate Head Coach Jay Varady has been named to the coaching staff for its U-18 Select Team that will compete at the 2010 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament from August 9-14 in Breclav, Czech Republic, and Piestany, Slovakia. Varady will serve as an Assistant Coach under Head Coach Tim Army.
Varady, 33, won a gold medal with USA Hockey at the 2010 World Junior Championships, where he served as a Video Coordinator. He also has experience coaching at USA Hockey's 2008 National Junior Evaluation Camp.
A member of the Silvertips' coaching staff since their inaugural season, Varady spent four years as an Assistant Coach with Everett prior to his promotion to Associate Head Coach in May, 2007. Under his guidance, the Silvertips have posted a Western Conference Championship and three U.S. Division Championships while making the playoffs in each of his seven years with the club. Prior to his time in Everett, he served as an assistant coach with the Pittsburgh Forge, winning the Junior A NAHL National Championship in 2003. The Cahokia, IL native also played three seasons of Division I NCAA hockey with Union College prior to an injury that relocated him to the bench, where he served as a volunteer Assistant Coach for the 2000-01 season.
"It's always an honor to represent your country, and we're looking forward to heading over there for this competitive tournament," Varady said.
Varady becomes the seventh Silvertip and first Silvertip coach associated with the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, following participation by Leland Irving (2005 - Canada), Brady Calla (2005 - Canada), Zach Hamill (2005 - Canada), Shane Harper (2006 - United States), Vitaly Karamnov (2006 - Russia) and Kyle Beach (2007 - Canada).
The United States won the gold medal at the tournament in 2003, and finished as silver medalists six times, most recently as 2006. The tournament honors the late Ivan Hlinka, a former Czechoslovakian national team player and coach.
The Silvertips begin their eighth season in the Western Hockey League at home on Saturday, September 25th against the rival Vancouver Giants. For interviews, feature articles, and information on season tickets and ticket packages, please visit www.everettsilvertips.com or call (425) 252-5100.
